EXCELLENT HAWKE'S BAY SYRAH FROM CELEBRATED WINEMAKER ANT MACKENZIE
FIVE STARS 93/100 | Sam Kim, Wine Orbit - "Succulent fruit flavours with supple texture and fine-grained tannins"
Over the past 20 years Ant Mackenzie has crafted fantastic wines for some of the biggest names in New Zealand wine - Dry River, Framingham, Mud House, Te Awa and Spy Valley. Now, under his own banner, he has created a multi-tier range of wines with Theory and Practice range pitched as "contemporary wines with a creative edge".
Grown on the Limestone Hills above Havelock North, this is an impressive, powerfully packed syrah. It's an immediately attractive style with upfront fruit characters that are balanced with fine tannins and lingering spice flavours from maturation in French oak. Highly recommended.

The winery writes "Deep red in colour with a purple hue. A complex savoury nose with fruit characters of plum and blackberry. Notes of wet earth, roasted coffee and five spice give additional interest to the aromatic profile. The palate is full bodied and rich with a meaty and earthy complexity. The spice notes are from both the fruit-five spice and black pepper-and the newer barrels. An umami like savouryiness-beef stock and soy-comes from a long maturation time on yeast lees. The texture on the palate is from supple front palate grape skin tannins. These tannins help balance the fruit richness and give the wine structure without contributing hardness."
Sam Kim writes "Sweetly fruited and fragrant, the wine shows dark plum, thyme, cedar and warm spice aromas on the nose. The palate displays succulent fruit flavours with supple texture and fine-grained tannins, finishing lingering and attractively dry. Beautifully composed and elegantly expressed, offering delightful drinking. At its best: now to 2029."
