95/100 'Outstanding' | Cameron Douglas MS
Petane Station are a seriously boutique producer based in Esk Valley, Hawke's Bay. Viticulturalist and winemaker Phil works with his graphic designer wife (and their two young children on hand as eager grape samplers) to produce lovingly crafted, small batch wines.
The Petane Sfumato Chardonnay 2020 is rich and expressive, showing ripe stone fruit, baked apple and citrus on the nose, layered with subtle flinty notes, toasted hazelnut and vanilla oak. The palate is full-bodied and creamy with excellent texture, combining peach, nectarine and grapefruit flavours with gentle spice and savoury complexity from lees and French oak. Balanced by fresh acidity, it finishes long and smooth with lingering fruit and refined oak. Very impressive wine.

The winery writes "This wine has come from about a near perfect vintage and a lifetimes work of toil, creativity and experience. Hand harvesting, whole bunch pressing and indigenous fermentation in French oak puncheons (60% new) has created a full bodied yet finely textured wine with long concentrated complex flavours of peach, fig and citrus notes supported with aromas of soft white flowers, baked apple pie and toasted hazelnut. Unfined, vegan friendly."
Cameron Douglas MS writes "Complex, youthful and distinctive bouquet filled with aromas of ripe grapefruit and a flinty apple peach quality. The oak is bold, fresh and new with aromas of new wood and vanilla butter, some baking spice moments and cashew. Full-bodied, creamed-silk textures lead to flavours of stone fruits and citrus then vanilla and rich nutty complexity. A young wine with some development time ahead, but delivers a delcious mouthfilling quality already. Weighty, rich, oaky and lengthy, a wine for Chardonnay fans with a fine tannin texture and long conplex finish. Ideal drinking from late 2023 through 2029."
