Jim Barry Assyrtiko 2024

93/100 | James Suckling
93/100 | Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion
92/100 | Stuart Knox, The Real Review

How cool is this! When the Barry family planted Australia’s very first Assyrtiko vines back in August 2012, they did it at their treasured Lodge Hill Vineyard - a special site perched high in the Clare Valley that’s perfectly suited to this iconic Greek white variety. More than a decade later, Jim Barry’s pioneering spirit continues to pay off, and the 2024 vintage is another brilliant example of just how good Assyrtiko can be on Australian soil.

Bright, zesty and effortlessly refreshing, this is a wine that bursts with citrus, lemon zest and crisp green apple, layered with that signature sea spray minerality that lovers of Assyrtiko know and crave. The palate is taut and precise, all clean lines and chalky texture, finishing long, saline and beautifully dry.

The 2024 is a must-have for fans of bright, mineral-driven styles.

Tasting Notes

James Suckling writes "Crisp, mineral and chalky, showing aromas of citrus, white flowers and sea spray. The palate is medium-bodied with bright acidity and a mouthwatering finish."

Mike Bennie writes "An appealing white wine of gentle savouriness, brightness of fruit alongside that, floral lift and saline minerality. Yes thanks. It feels quite racy in texture but there's oatmeal and ginger biscuit qualities under tart lime and green apple fruitiness. The perfume is loaded with citrus blossom florals, sea spray, lime and ginger. A racy finish lends ultimate freshness. A very good vibe here."

Stuart Knox writes "Very pale lemon colour. Citrus and sweet pastry aromatics. Palate leans into apples and lemon, with a crunchy acid line that keeps thing light and vibrant. Good length; as it runs there’s a saline minerality which furthers its appeal."

The winery writes "The 2024 Assyrtiko is bright and lively with lifted aromas of guava, mango, and passionfruit combined with lemon and granny smith apples. The palate has an elegant acid line, with lemon and passionfruit flavours upfront, progressing to granny smith apples further to the back. Good length with a cool, clean, and steely finish."
