4.5 STARS | Yvonne Lorkin
Village Vineyards are the new hot players on the Havelock wine scene. Dai & Jenny Evans started out as orchardists, producing world class fruit that filled Kiwi luncboxes and market shelves for years until the family decided to move into grapegrowing. After years in France honing his skills, son Rhys has taken the helm as winemaker and champions the 'soft hand' approach to winemaking, crafting exquisite low intervention wines.
Inspired by the hum of the old Village Orchard fruit shop, this rosé produced from 100% merlot is all about summer flavour with a savoury twist. Dry and slightly crunchy, it shows bright red fruit, gentle texture and a clean, zippy finish. There’s nice weight through the middle, but it stays fresh and light on its feet. One for long lunches and shared plates!

The winery writes "This wine has our clays trademark intensity. A round, weighty mid palate gives way to zingy acidity that finishes light and clean."
