RICHLY WEIGHTED, GENEROUS HAWKE'S BAY CHARDONNAY AT ITS FINEST
GOLD MEDAL | Hawke's Bay Wine Awards 2024
93/100 'Excellent' | Cameron Douglas MS
93/100 | Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review
92/100 | IWC 2025
What a glorious example of modern Hawke's Bay Chardonnay this is. Vinted in the classic Hawke's Bay style, Villa Maria Reserve Chardonnay is full bodied, powerful and generously weighted. Expect aromas of ripe stone fruit, citrus flowers, grilled nuts followed by excellent structure and palate lift. The influence of barrel fermentation has provided flinty complexity and the finish is driven by beautifully pitched acidity. Simply sublime.
Every vintage always cleans up at the awards (the previous earning a whopping 6x Gold Medals!) and this 2022 is clearly no exception. This is serious wine. Cellar this wine with confidence for 5-8 years to see further complexity evolve.

Cameron Douglas MS writes "Varietal, ripe, focused, pure fruited and fresh with a bouquet and palate filled with peach and ripe red apple flavours, there’s plenty of vanilla and wood spice, nut and nectarine flavours to keep the palate busy. Medium+ acid line, fine tannins and a chalky mouthfeel overall. A touch of flint adds depth and complexity. Well made, youthful still with best drinking from late 2024 through 2029. Excellent value."
Bob Campbell MW writes "Deliciously textural chardonnay with impressive weight and length. Flavours include oyster shell, white peach, green apple and citrus/lemon curd. The wine is dry without being hard. Good food wine."
IWC judges write "Yellow apple, lemon, apple tart almonds and a creamy texture, some grapefruit on the long invigorating finish."
The winery writes "Fragrant citrus, complex flint and nut aromas combine with a distinctive core of mineral, lemon and mealy characters to form a seamless palate. Fine-grained French oak and refined acidity create a tightly woven palate with understated concentration and length."
