93/100 | David Walker Bell, Wine Folio
Advintage owner Mac says "Fair enough David, but this is more like 95-96pts in my book, all day long."
This is a masterful example of top-drawer, small-batch Marlborough Chardonnay and everything about this 2021 release speaks of quality. From the lay-flat cellar six packs, through to the premium labels and boldly embossed screw caps, this is a best of vintage, all-guns-blazing wine from Tohu and a must-consider wine for fans of premium New Zealand Chardonnay. Only 1800 bottles were produced.
It's rich and complex with flavours in the stonefruit and citrus spectrum, and a hint of nutty spice comes from fermentation in French oak. A touch of reductive flintiness adds a modern touch - and it's obvious that this wine has received every possible attention from the Tohu vineyard and winery teams.
A stunning wine and an excellent option if you're looking for something a bit special that may not have crossed your fine chardonnay radar before. Enjoy now or over the coming 5 years.

David Walker Bell, Wine Folio writes "A single vineyard wine from the Upper Awatere in Marlborough. A vibrant gold colour, with touches of green to the edges. Varietally pure aromas of nectarine, melon, grapefruit and lemon mix with hazelnut, struck-match flintiness and smoky herbs in the perfume. Quite rich and concentrated, with a balance of toasty oak, juicy acidity and pithy fruit tannin providing structure and spine on which the ripe fruit hangs. A silky texture adds roundness and slows the palate down, before a long, seamless finish."
The winery writes "This is a generous yet focused Chardonnay, showing both power and precision. Extended lees contact and natural malolactic fermentation bring structure and depth, while vibrant fruit and bright acidity carry through to a long, polished finish."
