UBERCOOL NEW ARRIVAL - TRY VERMENTINO!
Mac came across the Save Our Souls range after visiting Melbourne and attending an exclusive and intimate private dining experience with his daughter and her friends. Though not usually a fan of the 'low-fi' wines favoured by the likes of the bright, young things of Melbourne's wine crowd, he can humbly swear that these wines are seriously good.
Founded in 2008 by Jason Searle and William 'Bill' Downie, Save Our Souls are 'not trying to change the world, just a couple of souls, one glass at a time'. Bill brings his considerable experience from highly-esteemed wineries such as Bass Phillips and De Bortoli to the table. Hailed as Australia's original 'enfant terrible' of the wine industry and the 'grand-daddy of the natural wine movement', there's some serious winemaking pedigree on show here.
Usually found in Italy, Vermentino is a light-skinned grape variety that expresses a citrus and tree fruit notes. However, Save Our Souls describe their gorgeously golden, full-textured vermentino as closer to a viognier of the Northern Rhône, with notes of candied pineapple, honey and pear. It's perfect for sharing, or quite frankly, perfect for any ocassion. You have Mac's word on it.
The winery writes "Deeply golden in appearance with plenty of sediment in the bottle. Nose of honeyed flowers and a beguiling array of layered fruit. Caramelised pear tart and lime and cinnamon. It shows more commonalty with a Northern Rhône white than its ancestral roots from the Mediterranean."
