FIVE STARS 96/100 | Candice Wine Chat
95/100 'Outstanding' | Cameron Douglas MS
This is next-level chardonnay from one of New Zealand’s most exciting producers. The Manatu 2023 is a beautifully composed, deeply expressive wine that shows Pyramid Valley at the top of their game.
Hand-harvested and fermented in French oak barrels, this wine is crafted with precision and care at every step. It pours a soft, powdery lemon colour and immediately captivates with lemon blossom florals, creamy mascarpone, grilled citrus and a whisper of warm pikelet. The palate is pure class – think white nectarine, Meyer lemon and grilled hazelnut wrapped in a rich, savoury texture. Saline acidity cuts through with precision, leaving a finish that’s equal parts electric and indulgent.
Decadent, distinctive, and absolutely world-class. If you love serious chardonnay, this belongs in your cellar.

Cameron Douglas MS writes "A bouquet showing both complexity and youth, scent of fresh yellow stone fruits and grapefruit peel then layers of wood spice and leesy barrel ferment qualities. A mix of brazil-nut butter and smoky spices then a stony mineralised soil quality. On the palate a dry wine with a citrus drive reflecting the ideas of grapefruit and peel then a green peach and apple quality. Fine tannins from both fruit and oak and a backbone of acidity frame the wine well."
Candice Chow writes "This Chardonnay is packed with good energy and presence, ripples with saline and zingy acidity on a slightly chewy phenolic flow, lending a charming, lengthy, lifted finish."
The winery writes "Intriguing powdery soft lemon colour. Beautiful lemonwood floral notes alongside creamy mascarpone, pikelet and grilled lemon. Very composed symphony of white nectarine, Meyer lemon, grilled hazelnut finishing with salty electric acidity and a sense of rich crème fraiche. Composed and decadent, if a wine can indeed be that."
