Margrain Barrique Fermented Chardonnay 2023

This is very classy barrique-fermented chardonnay from lauded producer, Margrain. Finely crafted and built for the long haul, it shows plenty of promise on the nose with an amalgam of stone fruit and butterscotch flavours - and those characters flow through to a concentrated, creamy palate where they are joined with plenty of oak spice and cashew nut / citrus-brulee complexity. Layers of creamy acidity hold everything together beautifully allowing those pristine Martinborough Chardonnay flavours to remain the star of the show. Highly recommended.

The winemaker writes "Repeated warm rain and humid conditions required patience, daring and careful selected hand-picking to bring the best fruit possible into the winery in early to mid April. The resultant wine shows sweet pineapple and intense peach flavours, has generous mouthfeel and a firm backbone. Fermented and aged for 12 months in French oak barriques and allowed to go through full malolactic fermentation, with appropriate cellaring this wine should provide excellent drinking from 2024 to 2030."
