SMALL PARCEL WINES FROM ONE OF HAWKES BAY'S GREATEST WINEMAKING TALENTS.
RANKED IN WINEFOLIO'S TOP 10 SYRAH TASTING 2025
Rod Easthope forged his reputation during his years as Head Winemaker at Craggy Range. These days his focus is on Easthope Winegrowers where he makes small parcel wines of the very highest calibre. The ethos behind Easthope's wines is to put the work in to the vineyard and let the quality of fruit speak for itself - and they have more than achieved that goal.
Beautifully pure, linear and feminine in style, this syrah seduces you with violets, black and white pepper and smoked herbs on the nose. The palate is effortlessly long with no heaviness and layer after layer of savoury dark fruits in a textbook showcase of the modern Hawke's Bay style. A syrah that’s expressive and elegant on its own, yet built to sing alongside beef, lamb, or wild game. Gorgeous, repeat, gorgeous wine.

The winery writes "In the glass, it’s a deep garnet with electric crimson edges. Aromatically, it’s immediate and captivating—blueberry, lavender, aniseed, and a flicker of black pepper. The palate is vivid and finely structured: lush fruit threaded with tannin and tension."
David Walker Bell, WineFolio writes "Blueberry, cranberry, plum, root beer, orange peel, date and floral top notes of pot pourri, rose petal and flowering herbs. The balancing act here is exquisite. Whole bunch gives that clove spice and delicate dry floral, but there is a delicate oak as well – it is densely packed, with a dry, intensity. The aromatics seem to accent the flavours here too – with savoury coming ahead of sweet. Layers of ‘sous bois’, black pepper, fennel and graphite sit neatly between those pliant, spicy tannins. A balanced acidity gives a tremendous line into a tension, power and harmony at the back of the palate."
