SMALL PARCEL WINES FROM ONE OF HAWKES BAY'S GREATEST WINEMAKING TALENTS.
FIVE STARS 19/20 | Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine reviews
Rod Easthope forged his reputation during his years as Head Winemaker at Craggy Range. These days his focus is on Easthope Winegrowers where he makes small parcel wines of the very highest calibre. The ethos behind Easthope's wines is to put the work in to the vineyard and let the quality of fruit speak for itself - and they have more than achieved that goal.
Beautifully pure, linear and feminine in style, this Syrah seduces you with violets, black and white pepper and smoked herbs on the nose. The palate is effortlessly long with no heaviness and layer after layer of savoury dark fruits in a textbook showcase of the modern Hawke's Bay style. Gorgeous, repeat, gorgeous wine.
Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews writes "Deep, full, dark purple with a ruby hue, lighter on the rim. The nose is gentle full, structured and youthful, aromas of plums, black raspberries entwined with herbaceous stalks and violets, unfolding liquorice and delicate peppery dusting. Medium-full bodied, complex aromas of red plums, black raspberries enlivens by black pepper, violets; deep nuances of liquorice unfold, followed by herbaceous, fragranced element. The mouthfeel is elegant, fine-grained tannin extraction leaving a firm yet velvety grip, unveiling spices and framed a fine structure. Lacy acid precision draws a long, lingering fragranced finish. The wine is perfectly balanced between freshness, delicate fragrance and richness of fruit and herbal presence. Match with Provencal lamb and wild boar over the next 8 years. Handpicked, 100% whole bunch pressed and fermented to 13.5% alc, basket pressed and matured in French oak puncheons for 12 months."
The winery writes "Dark cherry, notes of aniseed, a hint of tar, and black pepper all jostle for aromatic attention. The palate is rich and full, yet has succulent tannins and texture. Enjoy now or over the next 5-7 years."
