Rod Easthope forged his reputation during his years as Head Winemaker at Craggy Range. These days his focus is on Easthope Winegrowers where he makes small parcel wines of the very highest calibre. The ethos behind Easthope's wines is to put the work in to the vineyard and let the quality of fruit speak for itself - and they have more than achieved that goal.
Frank’s Selection comes from a special parcel of syrah in Easthope’s home vineyard, crafted in honour of a dear friend who once owned the land. Hand-harvested and whole-bunch fermented, the nose reveals blueberry, five-spice, liquorice, and a lift of black pepper. The palate is rich and structured, with fruit-driven tannins supported by finely integrated French oak.
With only 300 bottles produced (just one barrel), this is a rare and thoughtful expression of syrah.

The winery writes "In the glass, it’s dark in colour with an aroma that is immediate and captivating - blueberry, five-spice, licorice and a flicker of black pepper. The palate is rich with fruit-derived tannin and supporting French oak characters. A Syrah that’s expressive and elegant on its own, yet built to sing alongside beef, lamb, or wild game."
Jane Skilton MW writes "Powerful and generously fruited with plenty of ripe cherry and plum aromas. There's a little bottle development emerging so there's some leaf tobacco, smoked meat and game. The palate is bold but there's a really lovely fine layer of chalky tannin that acts as a counterpoint ensuring there is balance. Long and sustained and drinking beautifully now, but no hurry."
