91 POINTS | Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
Winemaker Ant Mackenzie sits at the top table of Hawke's Bay winemakers and his partnership with well-known distributor Jeannine McCallum has seen the birth of the exciting Cognoscente range. We love everything about these wines. We love the super cool retro labels. We love the signature Ant Mackenzie generous winemaking. And we love the obvious value for money that this new range offers discerning wine buyers.
This wine is medium to full bodied with plush mouthfeel and plenty of juicy, spicy characters. Fresh acidity brightens the palate and lingers long after the wine is gone. An excellent representation of Hawke's Bay Syrah and is a very smart wine in this price range.
Deep red in colour with hints of purple and blue. A complex nose with hints of blueberry, cranberry, Chinese five spice and a roasted meat nuance. The palate shows bright acidity with finely structured fruit and oak tannins. Dry and very savoury.
Sam Kim writes "Offering sweet fruit notes with spicy/savoury undertones, showing dark plum, clove, olive and toasted nut aromas on the nose. The medium-full-bodied palate is supple and silky with lovely harmony and complexity, finishing lingering and pleasingly dry."
