FIVE STARS 98/100 | Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews
Flagship, fine wine from one of our favourite Hawke's Bay producers. This is a very pure expression of modern Hawke's Bay winemaking with layers of concentrated bold dark fruit flavours, and a spine of fine tannin. Exemplary.

Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews writes "Full, deep inky ruby-black, lighter on the rim. The nose is full and robust with aromas of leather, cured meat, cedar, an amalgam of spice entwined with plum, blackcurrant, blueberry and violet. Full-bodied, well-proportioned aromas of plum, ripe blackcurrant and blueberry intertwined with cedar, leather, cocoa, violet, cloves and nutmeg. The mouthfeel is comforting and satisfying with layers of fruit, savoury depths and a velvety fine-grained tannin framework supported by perfectly balanced, lacy acidity. This is an exceptional vintage of Cabernet Merlot with harmonious features and balance, persistent and satisfying. Match with tomahawk and braised short ribs over the next 12+ years. A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc."
The winery writes "The Cabernet Sauvignon is the backbone of this wine with the Merlot adding to the fruit profile while the Cabernet Franc is the catalyst that enhances and unifies the mid palate. Dark in colour, the 2020 Cabernet / Merlot exhibits blackberry, blackcurrant, dried herbs, earthy spice and cigar box. The new French oak adds to the mid palate which is generous and appealing. Cellaring will be rewarded."
