95/100 | Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Pioneering winemaker Grant Taylor has been crafting wines in Central Otago since 1993, when there were just 20 hectares of Pinot Noir planted. He created Valli Wines in 1998 with the aim of creating true representations of Otago’s subregions with unflinching intensity and purity.
The nose is immediately complex with lemon zest, green apple, lime, hazelnut, and a distinctive savoury note that is derived from the high solids fermentation. On the palate, the citrus flavours are in harmony with the incredible satiny texture. The wine is a juxtaposition of intensity and subtlety with real fruit purity at the core. Produced in small quantities, this chardonnay captures both the delicacy and depth that mark the region’s finest wines. Beautiful now, it promises to evolve gracefully for 12+ years, rewarding those who choose to cellar it.

Jen Parr writes "The limestone-rich soils influence both the shape and the flow of this wine with synergy between the tautly textured mid-palate and the racy acidity that gives it length. On the palate, the citrus flavours are in harmony with the incredible satiny texture. The wine is a juxtaposition of intensity and subtlety with real fruit purity at the core. Made in small quantities, this Chardonnay is immediately intriguing and should continue to evolve for 12+ years."
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes "The 2022 Waitaki Vineyard Chardonnay is grown on limestone soils out in Waitaki. The fruit was picked in early May (as opposed to late March at higher Brix in Bannockburn.) “A totally different world,” says owner Grant Taylor. On the nose, there’s nashi pear, white peach, a little fresh crushed curry leaf and river stone, white tea and a hint of orange blossom/oil. In the mouth, the wine is viscose and almost oily and rolling in texture, with powerful fruit and kiwi fruit acidity. It’s pure and crystalline in its fruit outlay."
