FIVE STARS | Michael Cooper "Coleraine from 2017 is as classy as ever."
In the first week of March every year, Te Mata Estate releases the new vintage of Coleraine. This is always the most important event on the New Zealand wine calendar and Coleraine 2017 follow recent vintages with another world class example of fine red winemaking.
The 2017 is another Classic Coleraine - supple and lithe with fine tannins and the structure to make it cellar well over the coming 20 years. The blend this year is 73% Cab Sauvignon and 27% Merlot. Production of Coleraine is well down on recent vintages and our typically generous allocation has been drastically cut. Buy now to avoid disappointment.
‘The most avidly collected of New Zealand red wines.’ | Decanter Magazine
'New Zealand's greatest red wine.' | Raymond Chan
'New Zealand's Grange' | The Wine Front.
The winery writes "Saturated, dark ruby with a neon-purple edge, Coleraine ’17 tantalizes with fragrant ripe cherry and fresh, black plum aromatics. The bouquet blossoms over a silky palate laden with lavender, sandalwood, cigar box, juniper and wild blackberry. With typically-refined tannins and a modern, pure, ripe-fruit freshness, Coleraine ’17 is energetic, supple and lithe. Balanced, and on point, Coleraine ’17 dances across the senses now, and will do for years to come – classically Coleraine".
Michael Cooper writes "This is a full-coloured, mouth-filling red with notably concentrated, well ripened blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, braced by firm tannins, and impressive harmony.S ince the debut 1982 vintage, Coleraine has stood out for its fragrance, complexity and subtlety. Coleraine from 2017 is as classy as ever."
