2020 was another sensational vintage in Hawke's Bay. Every varietal performed to its full potential and the 2020 Te Mata Estate releases are in exceptional form, with stunning reviews from NZ's top wine critics already flooding in.
Awatea 2020 is another exceptional release and it rivals the 2019 for the best Awatea to date. It's robustly weighted and powerful with silky cocoa tannins. Given the relatively humble price point this is magnificent buying; a wine to savour now or lay down for further reward.
Bob Campbell MW writes "95 pts. A blend of cabernet sauvignon 54%, merlot 34% and cabernet franc 12%. Elegant wine with blackcurrants, rose petals, fresh herbs, cedar wood and spicy oak (among others). Inevitably, Awatea will be compared to its big brother Coleraine. It stands up well particularly when price is factored in."
Sam Kim writes "Without question, the best Awatea ever made. It’s immediately inviting on the nose showing blackcurrant, sweet plum, subtle tobacco, floral and cedar aromas, followed by a wonderfully weighted palate displaying terrific fruit power and density. It’s sturdy and robust with silky texture and loads of cocoa tannins. A blend of 54% cabernet sauvignon, 34% merlot %, 12% cabernet franc. Exceptional value."
The winery writes "Awatea Cabernets/Merlot ’20 is a dark royal ruby; a bright purple glow at its edge. Immediate classical aromas of walnut and polished cedar shimmer amongst wild blackberry, currants, marzipan, and dusty sun-baked gravel. On the palate, sparkling red and black summer-fruits entwine with brilliant red roses, high notes of vanilla, and silky dark-chocolate tannin. Savoury, bright, sustained and sumptuous, Awatea Cabernets/Merlot ’20 simply shines."
Michael Cooper writes "Offering top value, this deeply coloured, highly fragrant red is mouthfilling, with concentrated ripe flavours of blackcurrants, plums, herbs and spices, finely integrated oak, and a tightly structured, persistent finish."
