"A masterpiece of detail and concentration." - Te Mata Estate.
FIVE STARS 96/100 | Sam Kim, Wine Orbit - "Beautifully layered mouthfeel backed by finely infused tannins"
95/100 | James Suckling - "Solid and structured yet highly approachable..."
After tasting this wine, our team says: A classic Alma from a top vintage. The 2024 is characteristically fulsome, with layers of lightly spicy, dark cherry and Damson plum flavours. In our minds Alma is an idiosyncratic take on New Zealand Pinot Noir and a style that may will resonate with fans of medium bodied Hawke's Bay Syrah.
First planted in 1999, Alma is the finest expression of Te Mata Estate’s enduring commitment to exceptional New Zealand Pinot Noir. Named in honour of Dr James Thomson, hero of the 1854 Battle of the Alma during the Crimean War and forefather to Te Mata Estate’s Buck family, this wine carries both heritage and heart. It is a tribute to courage, legacy and an unwavering pursuit of excellence.
Alma 2024 makes a strong statement for Te Mata. This is captivating pinot noir with rounded flavours in the red fruit spectrum, supple mouthfeel and some tannic grip. Fresh acidity refocuses the palate but those lush 2024 fruits shine through from start to finish. Subtle wood spice add more interest but remain in check, never taking over proceedings. James Suckling writes "Smoky aromas of fresh and dried strawberries with orange peel follow through to a medium to full bodied palate. Lightly dry tannins frame the wine beautifully. So savoury. Solid and structured yet highly approachable at the end."
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit writes "This is sweetly fruited and seductively fragrant, revealing ripe cherry, Black Doris plum, smoked
game, thyme, olive, and toasted almond characters with an Asian spice undertone. It’s silky smooth and supple in the mouth, offering a beautifully layered mouthfeel backed by finely infused tannins, making it superbly structured with a sustained, complex finish."
The winery writes "Alma '24 presents a captivating cherry red hue with a hint of purple. Its aromas is immediately enticing, featuring redcurrants, strawberries, fresh prunes, and ripe raspberries, complemented by delicate notes of violet, thyme, sage and warming chai spices. On the palate, the wine's weight and volume are further enhanced, creating a velvety texture that balances refreshing fruit with powdery tannins. Dark cherries and ripe plums blend seamlessly with liquorice and mulberry, culminating in a long finish of fruit sweetness and spice. A masterpiece of detail and concentration and irresistibly enjoyable."
