FIVE STARS 94/100 | Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
93/100 | Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot
Pontifex Wines is a Barossa Valley vineyard owned by Sam and Helen Clarke of Thorn-Clarke. Whilst still very much involved with Thorn-Clarke, Pontifex is a separate, small family concern that revolves around their own 17 acre vineyard where they live, between Tanunda and Nuriootpa. They produce just two wines - a shiraz and a grenache shiraz mourvedre.
This is rich and fulsome Barossa Shiraz with layers of spiy dark fruits with hints of wood spice and anise adding a further layer of complexity and charm. Very well made. Recommended.

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit writes "It's stylish and complex on the nose with dark fruit intensity, warm spice, smoked game and cedar characters, leading to a splendidly weighted palate offering velvety texture and polished tannins. Generous and flavoursome with a lengthy satisfying finish. At its best: now to 2034."
Ken Gargett writes "A classic Barossa Shiraz from a fine vintage. This is deep maroon in colour with a nose offering spices, florals, red fruits, a hint of licorice, dry herbs and especially, dark chocolate. Good intensity here with the palate moving to darker berries and flavours with black fruits, cassis and more chocolate underlined by cashmere tannins, good intensity and excellent length. This will drink well for at least the next decade. Lots to love here."
