94/100 | James Suckling
With two champion wine awards and a five star review under its belt, this sub $20 Gimblett Gravels Syrah punches well above its weight. The previous vintage of this sublime syrah was selected from an incredible 33,000 wines as No. 8 (and top Kiwi wine) on James Suckling's 'Top Value Wines of 2022'. This huge customer favourite has been made in a generous, savoury style this is always wonderful buying and comes with a longstanding reputation for overdelivery.
Highly recommended.
Andrew Caillard MW writes "Medium deep crimson. Fresh white pepper, raspberry, hint strawberry aromas with underlying vanilla notes. Supple and inky textured with ample red and dark berry fruits, fine looseknit slinky tannins and some savoury oak complexity. Peppery finish with star anise notes. Very pure and sinuous."
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit writes "This is instantly appealing on the nose with Black Doris plum, blueberry, violet, mixed spice and toasted nut aromas. The palate delivers excellent weight and rich fruit intensity, wonderfully supported by fleshy texture and silky tannins. Generous and flavoursome with a lengthy structured finish."
The winery writes "This beautifully fragrant Reserve Syrah from the Gimblett Gravels district in Hawke’s Bay displays blackberry, dark plum and toasted nut characters with subtle black pepper and violet complexity."
