FIVE STARS 95/100 | Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
92/100 'Premium' | Cameron Douglas MS
This is sensational. Matchbook's Old Head Chardonnay has become a firm favourite with the Advintage USA Chardonnay faithful so we were excited to learn that Matchbook had a wine that sits above Old Head and takes all the things we love about it and turns it up a few notches.
This is big, bold, rich style of chardonnay and we absolutely adore it. It carries all of those gorgeous buttery, creamy notes but sidesteps the sweeter characters that we often see coming out of the US. 2023 was an excellent vintage in the Dunnigan Hills sub-region and the fruit was in optimal condition. The juice was then aged in oak and underwent 100% malolactic fermentation to develop a creamy texture and lightly spicy notes.
An absolutely stunning wine and a must-buy for chardonnay fans that are looking for something a bit special.

Cameron Douglas MS writes "Aromas of roasted cashew nut and ripe peach then pineapple, coconut and clay mineral ideas. There’s a vanilla cream scent and bold bouquet overall. Youthful and enticing. ON the palate a full-bodied wine with core fruit flavours that mirror the bouquet, the ideas of nut and spice, wood and mineral follow. As the wine opens out in glass the measure of wood and smoke intensities. The tropical fruit ideas also return. Medium+ acid line, fine less and some tannins add texture and length. Well made and ready to drink from day of purchase through 2029."
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit writes "Richly fruited with enticing complexity, the bouquet shows notes of mango, golden peach, vanilla, roasted hazelnut, and brioche. It's succulent and supple in the mouth, delivering excellent weight and plush texture, beautifully framed by fine acidity, finishing long and delectable. At its best: now to 2030."
