Leeuwin Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Western Australia, Australia

96/100 | Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot
94/100 | Huon Hooke, The Real Review

Leeuwin Estate, one of the five founding wineries of the Margaret River region of Western Australia, is a family winery with an international reputation for consistently producing wines of outstanding quality. Celebrating the art of fine winemaking, the Art Series labels features paintings from Australia's leading contemporary artists and represent Leeuwin Estate's most opulent and age-worthy wines. Artwork for this 2021 cabernet sauvignon is by Ildiko Kovacs entitled "Hymn".

Deep crimson with a touch of purple, this wine opens with savoury oak, cocoa, and a hint of sea breeze. With air, layers of cedar, mulberry, and dried herbs emerge. Firm tannins frame a long, elegant finish, showing both regional character and cellaring potential.

Tasting Notes

Huon Hooke writes "Deep-ish red with a touch of purple in the rim, the bouquet starts out quite oaky, with regional nori/dried seaweed character. Shoe polish, dark chocolate and sawn timber. A puzzling wine, dominated by oak until it's given time and air. After several days it transformed into a stylish and quite Bordelais red, loaded with cedar, mossy sousbois, dried herb and background mulberry regional cabernet aromas. The tannins softened and it stood revealed as a classy regional cabernet."

Ken Gargett writes "Crimson/blood red hue, it offers entrancing complexity. There are notes of tobacco leaves, black fruits, chocolate, smoked meats, licorice, a touch of ever-so-slightly charry cloves and quality oak, which is superbly handled here. A silky texture, this is a wine of balance and length with the finest tannins. Intensity runs the full length. Eerily reminiscent of an Aussie version of Bordeaux (or possibly a Bordeaux version of Marg River?). Whichever, it is a cracking wine. Drink for twelve to fifteen years."
