Introducing Esk Valley’s new Artisanal range; a series that allows celebrated winemaker Gordon Russell to make interesting, small batch wines that indulge his personal preferences rather than being driven by the market dynamics of being part of the Villa Maria group of companies. They’re clearly aimed at the discerning drinker, but are very modestly priced given the quality they offer.
Grown in the stony soil of the famous Gimblett Gravels sub-region, this is Hawke's Bay's take on tempranillo. Originally hailing from Rioja in Spain, the early ripening and thick-skinned tempranillo grape produces wines rich in colour and tannin with great cellaring potential and this trophy winning offering from Esk Valley will continue to drink well until 2030. Think concentrated dark fruits, liquorice and earthy aromas with just a subtle hint of vanilla from some ageing in American oak barriques. Enjoy a glass and find that Rioja is closer than you think.

The winery writes "This is rich and robust wine. It pours a deep dense red, showcasing dark berry aromas, with a hint of vanilla from the inclusion of a new USA oak barriques, in the style of Rioja. Flavours of liqourice and black fruits, compliment the rich and full bodied palate."
