Established in 1976, Duckhorn Estate have spent the last 40 years creating a name for themselves as one of the premium producers in North America. While their portfolio has grown over the years, they have always had a reputation for producing iconic reds.
Their merlot was inspired by founder Dan Duckhorn's trip to Bordeaux. Vinted from 82% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1.4% Cabernet Franc, 0.4% Petit Verdot, 0.2% Malbec, it's a rich and ripe rendition that showcases the varied growing sites in Napa Valley. Vibrant dark fruit flavours flood the palate with subtle notes of clove / spice from extended oak ageing playing supporting roles.
The winery writes "From its tempting aromas of ripe cherry and black raspberry to its sweet, dusty tannins and supple texture, this a lush and expansive expression of Napa Valley Merlot. Luxurious flavors of black plum, rhubarb crumble and chocolate-covered raspberry mingle with hints of graphite and clove on the long, vibrant finish."
We stumbled on the Duckhorn portfolio years ago, while attending a Hollywood Bowl performance in Los Angeles. Duckhorn has a long pedigree in California, and a distinguished reputation among the "upper crust" wine connoisseurs.
The Duckhorn Merlot and Cabernet varieties continues to delight our family and friends year round.
If you want to impress someone, or just want to enjoy one of the best winemakers in California, you've found a winner in Duckhorn.
