Cuvar was originally launched as a premium brand in 2023, lead by 'father of New Zealand wine', Sir George Fistonich, however some lines have now been heavily discounted by the winery. This unreal opportunity puts a collection of high quality wines in the market at unprecedented prices. Secure your own requirements before cutting friends and colleagues in on the action.

Medium-bodied with a deep cherry-red hue, Cuvar Iris Pinot Noir 2023 opens with scents of black cherry, plum and gentle spice. The palate offers ripe dried fruit flavours with hints of cinnamon and cocoa, framed by silky, refined tannins and a lingering, elegant finish - a polished, crowd-pleasing Marlborough Pinot.

Perched 300 metres above sea level on an isolated peninsula, the Ballochdale Awatere Valley vineyard is surrounded by ravines and 30 hectares of regenerating native bush. A spectacular site, producing fruit of exceptional quality.

Čuvar, meaning Guardian in Croatian, celebrates Sir George's Croatian heritage which is also reflected in the label. The Iris is Croatia's national flower - a symbol of hope, wisdom and valour.

Tasting Notes

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit writes "Complex and enticing, the fragrant bouquet shows dark cherry, dried herb, warm mushroom and roasted nut characters, followed by a sensually appealing palate that's succulent and fleshy. It's finely flowing through the mouth, finishing impressively long and velvety."

Cameron Douglas MS writes "A lovely bouquet and palate with some raw energy, core of dark cherry and spices and a savoury dried herb quality. Flavours on the palate range from cherry to plum and raspberry to flowers. fine tannins with a chalky texture and medium+ acid line. Balanced and well made with best drinking from 2025 through 2035."

Candice Chow writes "Moderately deep ruby-red with a purple hue. The nose is gently full and poised, with aromas of black cherry, plum, delicate floral and spice. Medium-bodied, aromas of black cherry and plum entwined with cherry blossom, cinnamon, nutmeg and cocoa powder. The spices are well-proportioned and refined, melded with cocoa and reminiscent of black forest cake. Dusty, supple tannins leave a silky linger. This Pinot Noir is well-made and elegant with a silky, black forest cake expression. Match with glazed ham and pork tenderloin over the next 5 years. Fruit from Ballochdale vineyard, Awatere Valley, handpicked and machine-harvested fruit fermented with a small portion of whole bunch in open fermenters, aged in used and seasoned oak."

The winery writes "A bouquet reminiscent of Christmas cake mix and chocolate. Gorgeous ripe dried fruit notes with a hint of spice on the front palate. The structure reminiscent of delicate silk over homespun linen. A timeless crowd-pleasing Pinot Noir."
