Craggy Range Sophia Merlot Cabernet Franc 2013

96/100 | Huon Hooke, The Real Review
95/100 | David Walker Bell, Wine Folio

Sophia sits in Craggy's prestige range and is among the top examples of Hawke's Bay red wine. Vinted from a blend of carefully selected parcels of merlot (62%), cabernet sauvignon (19%), cabernet franc (18%) and petit verdot (1%) from the Gimblett Gravels region, it's complex, dark and robust. An exceptional wine.

Tasting Notes

Huon Hooke writes "This is a stylish, polished red of superb balance and refinement, one of Craggy’s best ever. The colour is deep and dark, the bouquet summons dried herbs and blackcurrant, reminding more of cabernet than merlot perhaps, the palate lush in blackberry, cassis fruit and soft, fine-grained tannins. The fruit ripeness is spot-on."

David Walker Bell, Wine Folio writes "A Bordeaux-style blend from the ‘Gimblett Gravels’ vineyard in an exceptional vintage. The blend leads with 62% Merlot, then 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. A very dark, black/red colour in the glass. Led by the merlot, with youthfully vibrant aromas of plum, blackberry, cherry and blackcurrant fruit, with a pretty lift of lavender and violet florals. Medium-bodied but richly concentrated, and still tight as a drum in the palate. The 12 years in bottle don’t seem to have put much of a dent in the firm structure, with crisp acidity and fine, chalky tannin still very tense and impenetrable. Hard to say when the peak window will come – could be another decade at least. Detailed and elegant, it has huge potential, when the savoury elements of tapenade, tar and peat that sit in the sidelines now will emerge and integrate."
