94 POINTS | Cameron Douglas MS "New Zealand’s new premium winemaker."
Quality estate grown Hawkes Bay Syrah that has been finely crafted for the Bostock family by celebrated winemaker Rod McDonald. This is an excellent example of a top flight winemaker stepping up in a difficult Hawkes Bay vintage. The 2018 Bostock Syrah sits somewhere in the middle between the masculine and feminine styles of Hawkes Bay Syrah with a pretty floral nose and spicy characters in the plum and dark red fruit spectrum. Well handled tannins provide a clean finish and plenty of promise should you choose to lay this wine down.
The winery writes "An enticing jostle of elegance and power. Beguiling aromatic purity of violets and freshly ground pepper with a beautiful chalky feel that ignites the excitement cool climate Syrah can convey."
Cameron Douglas writes "94 pts. Fantastic bouquet of Syrah with aromas reminiscent of baked raspberry and toasty wood spices, sweet black currant, clove and smoke. Youthful, complex and alluring. On the palate - weighty, warm, complex and fruity, varietal and spicy with ground pepper and dried herb. Tannins are fine to moderate with a mealy chalk dust texture, plenty of acidity to contrast the core of fruit and sweet wood smoke flavours. Balanced and well made with a lengthy totally enjoyable finish. The warmth and generosity of Hawkes Bay’s baked soil flavours show as well as thoughts of the northern Rhone. Best drinking from today and through 2025."
