BOMBSHELL 2013 VINTAGE WAREHOUSE DISCOVERY.
A gifted winemaker. A perfect vintage. An iconic artist. A generous, perfectly bottle-aged wine.
91/100 | Sam Kim, Wine Orbit : "lovely fruit intensity and silky texture."
An amazing discovery. A cellar stock take unearthed this forgotten gem from the warehouse of Rod McDonald Wines and we are excited to offer this perfectly bottle-aged merlot from the 2013 Hawke's Bay 'vintage of a lifetime.' With label art by lauded artist Dick Frizzell, Blanket Hills was winemaker Rod McDonald's "idea of what Hawke's Bay is capable of when you are chasing a bigger, more voluptuous style." Seven years on from vintage, it is now in brilliant form with a full, textured, integrated palate showing flavours of plum and currant with spicy notes of cedary oak. It is vibrant and alive with loads of fruit character and the finish is fresh, clean and persistent. In other words, it is drinking very, very well.
This wine comes to you in perfect condition and we agree with Rod that it will keep in this optimum drinking state for at least another couple of years. We don't know how many boxes you need to tick in your bottle-aged Hawke's Bay red wine checklist, but if there's another deal better than this, we would love to see it.

Sam Kim writes " 91pts. Wonderfully ripe and fragrant, the bouquet shows blackcurrant, dark plum, nutmeg and violet characters, followed by a succulent palate that is beautifully weighted and rounded. The wine delivers lovely fruit intensity and silky texture, nicely structured by fine, chalky tannins. Generously expressed and very approachable."
