The name Bilancia (Libra in Italian) came to winemaker Warren Gibson whilst reading his horoscope during a harvest in Italy, and his winemaking philosophy centres on balance, equilibrium and harmony.
Warren & Lorraine share a wealth of winemaking experience between them and this expertise shows, as Bilancia has been producing award winning wines since 1997. Hailiong from the 2023 vintage, this single vineyard chardonnay from Central Hawk'es Bay was whole bunch pressed to French oak barriques, resulting in a textural wine that combines ripe fruit flavours with a core seam of minerality and fine lees complexity. A truly outstanding wine from an exceptional winemaking team.

Stephen Wong MW writes "Spicy, overt struck-match reduction on the nose is 'just' under control on the palate. Intense saline minerality accompanies the grilled Meyer lemon flavours on the powerful, acid-focused palate which slowly reveals cinnamon, pepper and white peach flavours on the sneakily long finish. Taut, serious and ageworthy, this walks a fine line with the reduction but there is no denying the depth of flavour contained within. Brilliantly balanced and very elegant."
Erin Larkin writes "The 2023 Kaikora Vineyard Chardonnay is salty and spicy, with shaved fennel and salted peach, white flowers and ground white pepper. This is a remarkable effort given the conditions, and more than that, the year has gifted the wine with levity and lacy detail."
