The 2022 vintage of this well-priced wine was named in Andrew Caillard MW's 2022 Gimblett Gravels Annual Vintage Selection - one of the most coveted lists in New Zealand wine. It's the second time that Esk Valley Artisanal MCM has made his selection - a remarkable achievement given that the 2022 list includes such important wines as Craggy Range Le Sol (RRP$180) and Church Road Tom (RRP$220). The 2021 vintage is every bit as impressive with a GOLD MEDAL at the NZIWS and multiple FIVE STAR reviews, making it one of the sub$20 buys of this year, or any year you care to name. VERY LIMITED STOCKS!
GOLD MEDAL | NZIWS 2023
93/100 'Excellent' | Cameron Douglas MS
FIVE STARS 93/100 | Sam Kim, Wine Orbit - "Succulent fruit flavours combined with silky texture and fine tannins, finishing splendidly long and flavoursome"
Esk Valley’s exciting Artisanal range allows celebrated winemaker Gordon Russell to make interesting, small batch wines that indulge his personal preferences, rather than being driven by the market dynamics of being part of the wider Villa Maria group of companies.
Vinted from 42% malbec, 29% cabernet franc, 20% merlot and 9% cabernet sauvignon, this is deep red in colour and bursting with dark fruit flavours that are characteristic of the Gimblett Gravels region. It's soft, supple and has a silky smooth finish. Sensational wine from Gordon and the Esk Valley team, with exceptional cellar potential.

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit writes "This is instantly appealing on the nose with blackcurrant, Black Doris plum, violet, tobacco and roasted almond characters. The palate is equally enticing with succulent fruit flavours combined with silky texture and fine tannins, finishing splendidly long and flavoursome. From the Gimblett Gravels district. At its best: now to 2031."
The winery writes "This is a very deeply coloured wine as you would expect from a Malbec based wine. It displays rich plummy, jammy Gimblett Gravels fruit on the nose with hints of tobacco and dried herbs. On the palate it is a medley of power and concentration from Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon allied with softer Merlot tannins. This is a full bodied and complex wine, and an ideal accompaniment to red meat dishes."
