96 POINTS | Cameron Douglas MS "youthful, focused, high energy and very exciting."
96 POINTS | Sam Kim, Wine Orbit "hugely charming and enticing"
The 2019 vintage is now widely recognised as the greatest Hawke's Bay vintage in living memory; a year where every varietal performed to its full potential. Tasting these 2019 wines at Te Mata was a joy, with Awatea very clearly in the form of its life.
It is easily the best Awatea we have tried; a plush and silken cabernet dominant expression with to-die-for palate weight. Nick Buck commented that 'it was easily Coleraine quality in a typical year', and we wholeheartedly agree with his assessment. In our book, Awatea has not shown these levels of upfront power and soft, mouthfilling roundness before. Given the relatively humble price point this is magnificent buying; a wine to savour now or to lay down for further reward.
Cameron Douglas MS writes "96 pts. Very youthful and concentrated with dark berries and clove vanilla oak, smoky and forward, varietal and urgent. Great wine - young and needs time, but has power and muscle I have not really noticed before. Spicy plums and dark berries, black berry and black currant. Firm tannins and acidity, youthful, focused, high energy and very exciting."
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit writes "96 pts. Instantly satisfying and inviting on the nose, showing blackcurrant, dried herb, floral and spicy oak characters, leading to a delectably expressed palate that’s filled with dark and red fruit flavours with a discreet oak infusion. Offering excellent structure and immense drinkability at the same time, it’s hugely charming and enticing. A blend of 46% cabernet sauvignon, 32 merlot & 22 cabernet Franc."
