Smith and Sheth's CRU range represents the very top tier of their wines and every attention is given to the growing, harvesting and production of these wines. Their Heretaunga Syrah comes from the famed Gimblett Gravels sub-region and it shows classic dark berry fruit characters with a hint of peppery spice. Oak treatment has added complexity and structure. Drink now or tuck some away.
Cam Douglas MS writes "Intensely varietal and fruity with a core of ripe raspberry and red currant fruit then white peppercorn scents, no mistaking the layer of fresh toasty new oak with baking spices, bacon and toasty barrel aromas. Complex with a stony mineral layer and inviting bouquet. On the palate - firm, tense, youthful with a core of fruit and oak tension, flavours of dark berries, raspberry and plum, there’s a spicy toasty, an aged meat layer and salty peppercorn. Firm tannins and acidity remind me this is a youthful example and not yet ready. Long finish, persistent and fresh."
Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews writes "The nose is softly full with intensity, fragrant violet aromas melded with ripe plums, blackberries; a subtle note of cured meat savouriness entwined with eucalyptus and spice. Medium-full bodied, bright fruit and herbaceous on the palate, nuances of mint, violet interweave blackberries, plums, along with anise and black peppercorns, unfolding subtle meatiness. The mouthfeel is creamy with fine-grained tannin extraction; it framed a fine structure. The fruit is bright with weight and intensity, herbaceous aroma added another layer of depth to the wine, linger to a long, refined finish. This is a savoury Syrah with fruit density and fragrant quality on a creamy palate with a fine-grained tannin structure."
The winery writes "A deep, crimson red colour with dark red berry fruit, red liquorice florals and pepper on the nose. Complexity from the small new oak component sits perfectly in the background on the palate. Savoury, long and finely tuned without being heavy, dense or dry. A classic Hawke's Bay Syrah with the structure that will allow it to age for at least 10 years."
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit writes "Offering brilliant fruit purity with gorgeous complexity, the wine shows dark berry, floral, vanilla, subtle spice and roasted almond characters. It's concentrated and flowing on the palate, displaying deliciously ripe fruit flavours together with refined mouthfeel and seamlessly woven tannins. Poised and harmonious with excellent structure, ensuring its gradual evolvement."
