There are few more respected people in the Hawke’s Bay wine industry than Kate Radburnd. Her long tenure running Pask and numerous governance and judging roles within the industry have created a legacy that she should be extremely proud of.
Now her days are spent on Radburnd Cellars - a no expense spared attempt to make the very best wines of her career. A small range of elite, small batch wines are being rolled out with this 2018 Chardonnay the first cab off the rank. This wine has earned a huge amount of positive chatter from her senior winemaker peers - and there is widespread consensus that this first Radburnd Cellars wine will be recognised as one of the finest Chardonnays to be released from Hawkes Bay to date.
It is immediately clear that Kate’s view on Chardonnay has changed since the Pask days. Radburnd 2018 Chardonnay is a study in finesse and refined understatement. On the nose it is classic barrel fermented Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay while the palate is showing layers of creamy regional stonefruit and citrus flavours and excellent palate drive. The French oak component adds to the conversation but never dominates proceedings. The finish is very long with plenty of acidity. It’s a style that has clearly been made for the long haul, and while it is already an outstanding glass of Chardonnay, it’s real beauty will be revealed over the coming 5- 6 years. In our view, it is about as good as it gets. Bravo.
PLEASE NOTE. six pack orders (or multiples thereof ) are shipped in lay flat cases. Single bottle orders will be shipped in individual cases. Both the individual and six pack cases are exquisite - setting new standards for New Zealand wine presentation. They will make a stunning personal or corporate gift.
An elegant Chardonnay which focuses on the beautiful structure so evident in this grape variety. Pristine fruit and balanced acidity are the backbone, enhanced with seamless texture and mouthfeel. Citrus notes, particularly grapefruit pith abound, gracefully supported by sweet French oak.
Bob Campbell writes "Concentrated, powerful chardonnay with citrus, tree fruit, peach, struck-flint, mineral, hazelnut and brioche flavours. A seamless, sophisticated wine that's a pleasure to taste now but promise to develop well with bottle age."
Michael Cooper writes "From winemaker Kate Radburnd, best known for her long spell at Pask (1990–2017), the classy, youthful 2018 vintage (5*) was grown at Mangatahi and Bridge Pa, hand-picked and fermented and matured for 11 months in French oak puncheons and barriques (new and seasoned). Full of potential, it is mouthfilling and highly concentrated, with deep, citrusy, peachy flavours, woven with fresh acidity, finely integrated oak, and impressive vigour, complexity and length. A top debut, it’s well worth cellaring to 2022+”
