FIVE STARS 96/100 | Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
This wine made Andrew Caillard's 2019 Gimblett Gravels Annual Vintage Selection
From the excellent 2019 vintage and crafted from older vines, this is a power-packed Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend from the famed Gimblett Gravels sub-region. Its a dense and dark, broody wine with powerful fruit weight countered with fine tannins and gentle acids. Exemplary.
Lovely bouquet with strong messages of fruit, oak and complexity. Darker fruit flavours with blackberry, dark plum and wild forest berries, then violets and dark oak spices. Dry with fine dusty and chalky tannins, plenty of acidity and a long, complex and tasty finish.
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit writes "A stunning rendition of Bordeaux style, the immensely complex bouquet shows cassis, dark cherry, spicy oak, tapenade and dried herb characters, followed by a powerfully concentrated palate offering richness as well as refinement. Firm and bold with layers of velvety texture, finishing persistent and structured. From the Gimblett Gravels district. A blend of 74% cabernet sauvignon & 26% merlot. At its best: 2023 to 2035."
Cameron Douglas MS writes "Complex and enticing bouquet with a core of ripe dark red berry fruits, black berry and black currant, sweet tobacco, iron sand and smoky barrel. Complex textures unfold quickly as the wine touches the palate with firm, ripe tannins from barrel and fruit, floral sweet oak and violet, clove and vanilla and a dry stony core earthy quality. Lengthy yet youthful, a long finish, complex and dry. Offering excellent drinking from 2023 through 2030+."
Cabernet Sauvignon (74%) and Merlot (26%).
