ONE OF THE BEST AMERICAN CHARDONNAYS WE HAVE TASTED IN THIS PRICE BAND.
FIVE STARS 93/100 | Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
Fans of bold, mouthfilling Californian Chardonnay, it's time to focus. Matchbook 2019 from the Dunnigan Hills sub region is an exciting new release to hit the New Zealand market and in our view, it is clearly the best of the USA Chardonnays we have seen in this price bracket in recent years.
Dry to taste and overflowing with ripe stonefruit, lemon crème brûlée, sizzled butter and toasty oak flavours, this is everything you can ask for in American Chardonnay and seeing wine of this calibre in the sub$20 bracket is a massive win for local fans of robust Chardonnay.
Thankfully Matchbook sidesteps the sweeter fruit characters of some of the market leaders in this category and has been handled with respect in the winery. It has been barrel fermented in a combination of French, American & European oak and that regime has added further weight and complexity to this impressive, opulent wine.
The results and the critical acclaim speaks for themselves. Buy with our highest recommendation.
Sam Kim writes "Splendidly ripe and complex, the wine shows grilled peach, baked fig, cedar and vanilla characters on the nose. It's equally satisfying on the palate with excellent weight and roundness, combined with creamy mouthfeel and refreshing acidity, finishing gorgeously long and satisfying'."
The winery writes "The 2019 vintage is true to the Matchbook Chardonnay signature style: a delicious balance of fruit and toasty oak. A golden sunshine color, the wine opens with a fresh bouquet of melons and apples. The aromas are echoed in the rich flavors of apricot and honey, butter and toast. 60% of the wine went through malolactic fermentation adding a nice creamy texture that leads to a long, lingering finish."

My all time favourite
I love this Chardy! Big bold buttery! Just the way I like it.
