91 POINTS | Alexander Peartree, Wine Enthusiast
Sir John Kirwan MBE, the former rugby legend and mental health advocate, has been conducting a love affair with Italy for over 30 years now. (It's ok, his Italian wife is from Treviso, she gets it!) The fruit of this love affair is the selection of truly delicious and finely crafted Italian wines that he imports into New Zealand. With his son Luca and daughter Francesca playing an active role in the business, John and his family have carefully chosen wines that capture the heart and soul of the regions they are made from.
Primitivo is one of Italy's greatest grapes. Though its skin is delicate and thin, it can create powerful, complex, savoury and age-worthy reds. This medium to full-bodied expression is brimming with notes of ripe dark fruits and sweet spices and willl pair beautifully with slowly braised beef cheek or strong cheeses.
Alexander Peartree, Wine Enthusiast writes "This luscious red delivers dense cherry jam and black raspberry tones all wrapped in a framing of toasted fennel seed and sweet licorice. It's soft, silky and sultry on the medium-bodied palate, with velvety tannins and bright, lasting acidity to lend structure and length to all the fruit and spice tones."
The winery writes "The colour is medium deep ruby, with a pure and modern nose of ripe dark fruit, cherry, plum, sweet spices like ginger and aniseed with discreet oak. The palate is medium to full with a rounded texture, a well-balanced freshness underneath with a rather long and broad spicy finish."
