Hopesgrove Silver Lining Syrah 2014

Hopesgrove is the Paki Paki hillside vineyard venture of Pieter Koopman and this Reserve level release is a testament to this special piece of dirt and Pieter's undoubted winemaking prowess. Now entering its ideal drinking window, this excellent 2014 release is a study in fine Hawkes Bay Syrah. It is a supple and very attractive style that straddles the feminine / masculine Syrah spectrum and offers layers of floral notes on the nose and spicy dark red fruits on the palate. This is excellent wine with plenty of life in it. Highly recommended.

Tasting Notes

Raymend Chan writes "Medium-full bodied, the palate is elegant in presentation with penetrating and intense, harmoniously melded flavours of ripe blackberries, black plums and black pepper with a layer of Asian spices, unfolding violet and black florals. The mouthfeel is very fine-grained in structure with flowery tannins, and balanced, softly ripe acidity. This has a harmonious and integrated core and line that carries to a long, lingering, concentrated finish of black fruits, spices and oak toast. This is an elegant and harmonious, but intensely fruited Syrah with fine blackberry, plum, black pepper and spicy flavours and a fine-grained palate with a long finish. Match with lamb, venison and game dishes over the next 8+ years."

Michael Cooper writes "Still unfolding, the 2014 vintage (5*), tasted in mid-2019, was estate-grown, hand-picked and matured for 28 months in French oak casks (66 per cent new). Deeply coloured, it has a real sense of youthful potential. Mouthfilling and supple, with concentrated, plummy, spicy flavours, complex and savoury, it should be at its best 2021+."

Sam Kim writes "Youthful and inviting, the bouquet shows dark plum, cherry pie, clove, game and cedar characters with a hint of black pepper. The palate is succulent and rounded, and displays lovely fruit intensity together with silky texture and supple tannins. The wine combines stunning fruit purity with appealing savoury complexity, and offers layers of delectable flavours. Sweetly fruited and richly savoury at the same time. Super long, very promising."
