There are few more respected people in the Hawke’s Bay wine industry than Kate Radburnd. Her long tenure running Pask and numerous governance and judging roles within the industry have created a legacy that she should be extremely proud of. Now her days are spent on Radburnd Cellars - a no expense spared attempt to make the very best wines of her career and this, her second release under this eponymous label, is an elegant, refined take on modern Hawke's Bay Syrah.
This is tightly woven wine with very attractive, floral aromatics in the feminine form and a palate that brings layers of dark red fruits with hints of anise and spice. Lovers of fine Hawke's Bay Syrah will immediately recognise the underlying power this wine shows in its youth, and the silken tannin structure and incredibly long finish promises much for those with the patience to lay some down. It has clearly been made to age gracefully and we would love to revisit this 2020 release in 5 years time when it has fully blossomed and unveiled its secrets.
We would advise decanting if opening a bottle in the next 2-3 years to bring out the detail on the palate.

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit writes "It's seductively expressed on the nose showing dark plum, bouquet garni, cedar, cured meat and rich floral aromas. The concentrated palate is both refined and robust, displaying outstanding weight and depth, wonderfully enhanced by seamlessly flowing mouthfeel and finely infused tannins. The wine combines exceptional fruit purity with alluring complexity, finishing immensely long and gratifying."
Cameron Douglas MS writes "A vibrant core of dark purples and reds with a pink-ish rim and some mild colour staining of the tears. Aromas of complexity and youth, dark plums and black raspberry, medium baking spice layers from barrel and soil, there’s an amazing amount of depth and purity with some licorice and spice layers, a whisper of red peppercorn spice and youthful enticing vibrato. Absolutely delicious on the palate, pure, ripe, fresh, youthful, taut, harmonious and new. Fruit flavours reflect the bouquet along with layers of barrel flavours and mineral. Tannins are ripe, polished, abundant and fine, acidity sets the back bone in place. A wine that drinks well after 2 days open, is excellent with food and will reward if cellared properly. Best drinking from late 2024 through 2030+."
