de la terre is the winemaking venture of Tony and Kaye Prichard who have a winery, cellar door and cafe complex on the Taihape Road out of Hastings. 'de la terre' means 'of the earth' and refers to the vineyards soils as well as the earth brick construction of their buildings. They focus on creating small parcels of unique, elegant wines and grow a number of interesting varietals that are seldom seen in NZ.
Tannat comes from the South-West region of France and is known for its big colour, bold flavours and strong tannic component. It has the nickname ‘la folle noir’ which translates to 'the crazy black grape' because of its unique aroma and flavour profiles. This 2019 release is fresh and vibrant with bright fruit and French oak notes. Subtle earthiness makes an appearance and, with a few years in the cellar, this will become more prominent.
The winery writes "The colour of the wine is a rich and vibrant hue of real intensity. The nose has a totally unique fruit profile of blackberry/blueberry notes and an underlying earthiness with hints of fountain-pen ink and a seam of French oak. At present, the wine displays a youthful vibrancy – our experience is that with bottle age, the primary fruit gives way to earthiness and increased complexity. There is a burst of black cherry fruit with a fresh lively mid-palate. The winemaking was directed towards softening the tannins to create mid-palate ‘flesh’ – tannins support rather than dominate the palate here. Acid has been managed to enhance the wines vibrancy and fruit. This huge wine will work well with a wide range of red meat dishes. We expect it to last a very long time – 10+ years."
Cameron Douglas MS writes "Excellent colour with a core of dark purple and ruby rim. Aromas of crshed blackberry, dark plum and black currant then contrasting scents of dark chocolate and clay mineral qualities. The combination of time in barrel and lees contact along with the core red fruit scents delivers a seductive complexity. Textured, taut, complex and youthful on the palate. Flavours mirror the bouquet with a foundation core of fruit, bold tannins and acid line. A wine that will happily develop and age nicely in your cellar - or, you could enjoy today with your favourite red meat protein or earthy vegetraina dish."
