94 POINTS | Cameron Douglas MS
FIVE STARS 93/100 | Bob Campbell MW
FIVE STARS 94/100 | Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
Critically acclaimed Hawke's Bay producer Black Barn craft some seriously impressive wines. This offering is wonderfully supple, smooth and complex Syrah with lovely persistence. A real treat.
Cameron Douglas MS writes "There’s no mistaking the core scents of variety with dark plum and baked raspberry, a fine layer of anise and barrel spices add complexity while a dark violet and toasty roasted nut quality deliver depth and breadth. Youthful and bold on the palate with a taut core mouthfeel then flavours of dark berries, spicy plum and five spice claim their space on the palate. Tannins are ripe, nicely polished and abundant. Acidity offers freshness carrying flavour and emphasises the youthful power and drive of this wine. Well made, youthful and best enjoyed with food through 2022 to 2025, then on its own (or with food) through 2030+."
Bob Campbell MW writes "Intense, supple syrah with cassis, blackberry, black pepper, violet and spicy oak flavours. It sits perfectly between the big, rich blockbuster style and the taut, nervy, floral-focused kind of syrah. A stylish wine."
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit writes "Pristine and splendidly charming, the wine shows dark plum, floral, mixed spice and toasted nut aromas on the nose, followed by a succulent palate displaying fine texture and supple mouthfeel. Beautifully smooth and rounded with fine polished tannins."
