This is sensational. Matchbook's Old Head Chardonnay has become a firm favourite with the Advintage USA Chardonnay faithful so we were excited to learn that Matchbook had a wine that sits above Old Head and takes all the things we love about it and turns it up a few notches.
This is big, bold, rich style of chardonnay and we absolutely adore it. It carries all of those gorgeous buttery, creamy notes but sidesteps the sweeter characters that we often see coming out of the US. 2018 was an excellent vintage in the Dunnigan Hills sub-region and the fruit was in optimal condition. The juice was then aged in oak and underwent 100% malolactic fermentation to develop a creamy texture and lightly spicy notes.
An absolutely stunning wine and a must-buy for chardonnay fans that are looking for something a bit special.
Sam Kim writes "Combining opulence with graceful sophistication, this is a stunning California chardonnay filled with delectable flavours. The fragrant bouquet shows golden peach, vanilla, spicy oak and oatmeal characters with a light touch of citrus zest. The powerful, concentrated palate exhibits outstanding depth and layers rich texture, leading to a persistent seamless finish."
Cameron Douglas MS writes "A bold and richly scented bouquet with aromas of brazil nut and vanilla, roasted yellow stone fruits and baked pear. There’s a baked custard and brown spice scent adding power and intensity. On the palate – full-bodied , creamy, warm, balanced and flavourful. The tastes of custard and peach, vanilla and apple, pear and baking spices combine to complete this wine with great success. Balanced and well made with great drinking from 2021 through 2026."
