FIVE STARS 18.5/20 | Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews
4.5 STARS | Michael Cooper
Redmetal are one of our favourite Hawkes Bay producers and over the years we have developed a monster following for their graceful red wines. This merlot dominant blend has always been our best seller and the 2019 is another excellent release. Middleweight in the classical sense, this is serious, thoughtful wine at a sensible price - a soft, approachable and food-friendly style from owner / winemaker Grant Edmonds.
In true Redmetal style, the 2019 is soft, generous and over-delivers on this price point with a bit of magic coming from the excellent 2019 growing season.
Michael Cooper writes "Drinking well now this sturdy red shows good complexity, with strong. ripe, plummy, slightly spicy and nutty flavours that are rich and smooth. Fine value."
Candice Chow writes "Deep, ruby-red, moderately full, lighter on edge. The nose is full and elegantly presented, aromas of violet, interweave cassis, plum, blackcurrant leaf, unfolding barrel spice and a hint of minerals. Full-bodied, succulent aromas of cassis, plum melded with enticing scent of violet and blackcurrant leaf, and a touch of cloves. The flavours are well-proportioned and elegantly presented. Supple, fine-grained tannins provide a lightly firm grip, linger with violet and herbaceous leaf element to a sustained finish. This is a well-balanced Merlot, Cabernet Franc blend with succulent fruit, floral and herbaceous details and a fine-grained palate."
The winery writes "Ripe black plum flavours with hints of chocolate and licorice along with fine, soft tannins and a touch of oak. A classic Merlot based Hawkes Bay red from a very warm vintage that will reward cellaring for a decade or more."
