This is sublime Gimblett Gravels Syrah from the Bay's oldest winery. Made in a generous, savoury style this is always wonderful buying and has a longstanding reputation for overdelivery. Mission Estate have recently updated their livery too and we think it's fantastic; it adds a generous dose of class to an outstanding wine. Bravo.
The winery writes "This beautifully fragrant Reserve Syrah from the Gimblett Gravels district in Hawke’s Bay displays blackberry, dark plum and toasted nut characters with subtle black pepper and violet complexity."
Sam Kim writes "It's wonderfully ripe and beautifully fragrant, showing Black Doris plum, sweet raspberry, clove and roasted nut aromas on the nose with a hint of cocoa. The palate delivers excellent weight and roundness together with silky texture and fine tannins, finishing long and delectably appealing."
Cameron Douglas MS writes "Varietal, fruity and enticing with a core of red fruits and spices, some toasty barrel moments and peppery highlights. Flavours of raspberry and black currant, plum, spices and crumbled stony soil suggestions. Dry with a decent weight, firm and ripe tannins, plenty of complexity, contrasting acid line and lengthy finish. youthful and needing some cellar time, well made with best drinking from 2022 through 2028."
James Suckling writes "A fragrant nose with aroms of dark cherries, blueberries, bay leaves, smoke, stones and black pepper. Full-bodied with polished tannins. Round and creamy with a velvety texture and spicy finish."
Michael Cooper writes "The very graceful, well priced 2019 vintage (4.5*) was matured for a year in French oak barrels. Full-coloured, with a fragrant, fresh, peppery bouquet, it is mouth filling, vibrantly fruity and supple, with strong plum, spice and black pepper flavours, showing good complexity, and a finely textured, harmonious, lingering finish."
