Truly outstanding Hawkes Bay Chardonnay from lauded winemaker Tony Bish. Vinted in a 100% barrel fermented, tour de force style this is a powerful wine that showcases the natural exhuberance of the famed Skeetfield Vineyards dry farmed, old vine Mendoza clones.

It's a concentrated, mouthfilling wine with superb fruit weight and incredible persistence. It's already rewarding but will blossom magnificently with cellar time and deserves to be put down.

Description

Raymond Chan writes "Bright straw-yellow colour with light golden hues, paler on edge.  The nose is rich and full with well-concentrated and deeply packed aromas of ripe yellow stonefruit and citrus fruit complexed by an amalgam of mealy and nutty oak, creamy barrel-ferment elements, oxidative detail, unfolding some lemon-curd and buttery MLF elements.  The nose retains a fresh minerally edge.  Medium-full bodied, the palate is richly packed with concentrated and layered flavours of ripe yellow stonefruits melded with flavours of creamy barrel-ferment and nutty lees and oak elements, and lemon-curd MLF and subtle oxidative complexities.  The palate is multi-dimensional, revealing complex detail as it flows.  This has an underlying power with fine, lacy acidity providing energy and tension.  The flavours flow along a very fine-textured line, leading to a very long and sustained, deeply concentrated and complex-flavoured finish.  This is a complex, multi-dimensional, layered Chardonnay with stonefruit, mealy, nutty lees and oak flavours along with barrel-ferment and MLF richness on a fine-textured, fresh and youthful palate.  It will develop well over the next 5+ years.  Match with roasted and grilled white meat dishes.  Hand-picked Mendoza clone fruit from the ‘Skeetfield’ vineyard, Ohiti, fully barrel fermented by indigenous yeasts with high solids to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 12 months on lees in 60% new Taransaud French oak with 100% MLF.  19.5/20  "

The taste and texture of this wine endorses the “old vine, dry farmed, Mendoza chardonnay” statement on the back label. "
