BIG BOLD CREAMY GISBORNE CHARDONNAY
90 POINTS | Bob Campbell, MW.
BUY OF THE WEEK 24/4/18 | Bob Campbell, MW.
It was 2am in a dodgy Wellington bar three years ago when we laid down a challenge to TW Wines owners Paul Tietjen and Geordie Witters. We asked them to make the richest, creamiest Gisborne Chardonnay possible at a price that would allow us to retail that wine under $20 on a case buy. With some of the most famous vineyards on the East Coast and a gilt edged Chardonnay reputation we knew these legendary Gisborne vinters would be up to the task and TW GOLD is the result. The first vintage went down in Advintage history as one of our great Chardonnay buys.
This is the second vintage of GOLD and it's the best yet. This is Gisborne Chardonnay in the classic 'old school' style - richly weighted with masses of ripe stonefruit flavours all smothered with lashings of lemon cream. It's balanced and satisfying. There's nothing elegant about it. Praise the Lord.
Bright pale gold, this Chardonnay expresses aromas of sweet golden fleshed stone fruit, pineapple, jasmine and ripe citrus. Added richness from oak gives aromas of hazelnut and cream. The wonderfully rich palate shows Chardonnay at its’ best with full flavours of golden peach and pineapple wrapped in nutty oak and lashings of cream. Already drinking well this wine will blossom over the next five years developing added richness and charm.
Bob Campbell, MW writes "Peaches and cream chardonnay that’s slightly oakier and dryer than the Estate label. Also a tad green but showing good purity and balance with a, dare I say it, suggestion of mineral character."
