Toru (translating to 'three' in Maori) is a field blend of gewurztraminer, riesling and pinot gris from the Te Whare Ra Home Block vineyard in Marlborough. First vinted in 2006, this was one of the first blends of its kind on the Kiwi market and it has evolved to become one of Te Whare Ra's flagship wines.
Their aim is to create a wine that references the distinctive styles of each of the three varietals, while creating an interesting, unique wine in its own right. The fruit is given every attention in the winery and is co-fermented to allow the varietals to meld and integrate. The resulting wine is multi-layered and textural with stone fruit and citrus flavours and a hint of spiciness. A stunning release.
Vinted from a blend of 67% Gewurztraminer, 22% Riesling and 11% Pinot Gris.
Cameron Douglas MS writes "Made with Gewurztraminer, Riesling & Pinot Gris – this is an exemplary wine and master class in co-fermentation, style and balance. Aromas and flavours of exotic tropical fruits, fresh citrus and apple, white flowers and spice. Equally intense and fruity on the palate with myriad flavours of fresh white fleshed fruits, citrus and tropical. Refreshing acid line carries flavours and a firm youthful mouthfeel through to a lengthy finish. Best drinking from purchase and through 2025."
Bob Campbell MW writes "A field blend of Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris that were co-fermented. A fragrant, appealing wine with a silken texture and deliciously lingering fruit and floral finish. Gewürztraminer is the dominant variety. An impressive wine."
Sam Kim writes "Offering pristine fruit aromas of apricot, rockmelon and juicy lemon on the nose with hints of spice and floral. The palate delivers excellent weight and succulent fruit intensity backed by rounded mouthfeel and whispering sweetness. It’s vibrant and textural at the same time, leading to a lengthy delectable finish. A blend of gewurztraminer, riesling and pinot gris."
The winery writes "This 2020 Toru has an intriguing nose with notes of mango, fresh citrus, white florals and exotic spices. These lead into a multi-layered palate with flavours of mango, citrus, red apple and lychee with a lingering spiciness. The palate has excellent fruit concentration and weight with lovely creamy texture, plus a mineral edge which gives it great length of flavour."
