In the first week of March Te Mata Estate releases the new vintage of Coleraine. This is always the most important event on the New Zealand wine calendar and Coleraine 2016 follow recent vintages with another superlative, world class example of fine red winemaking. Stylistically the 2016, though not as overtly plush as the 2014, shares the same fruit forward characters and is laden with ripe fruits. Like the 2015 it has a fine seam of Bordeaux-esque pencil lead on the palate but the tannins are much finer and softer. While this is another 'approachable' Coleraine, the palate drive, length and structure are all there to ensure it will be another star in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
The winery writes "Brilliant magenta, Coleraine ’16 entices with concentrated rose syrup, fresh, fragrant raspberry, wild strawberry, ripe plum, thyme and cedar. Offering superb depth and complexity, Coleraine ’16 is defined by a precise, lazer-edge of pure, bright, red fruit. Framed by tight acid and silky tannins, all this extends elegantly into an exquisite and super-fine crescendo, giving exceptional length and finesse to the wine". The final blend is 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc.
