19.5/20 | Raymond Chan.
96 POINTS | Gary Walsh, The Wine Front. "New Zealand's Grange equivalent, only it comes from one place, is much cheaper, and to my tastes, is significantly better and more interesting."

In the first week of March 2017, Te Mata Estate will release Coleraine 2015. This is always the most important event on the New Zealand wine calendar and the 2015 follows the extraordinary 2013 and 2014 vintages as the most anticipated release in Te Mata's significant history. Having tasted the 2015 with Te Mata's Nick Buck we can assure you the winery has a 'three-peat" on their hands. All the classic hallmarks of this great wine are on show and Coleraine 2015 is another glorious example of fine Hawkes Bay winemaking. In our view, it is stylistically more in line with the 2013 vintage than the more opulent and plush 2014. It has a wonderful seam of Bordeaux-esque pencil lead on the palate and firmer tannins mean it is certain to be a star in the cellar. We expect Coleraine 2015 will show especially well over the coming decades and may well overshadow its siblings over time. For the second year in a row allocations of this most sought after wine are extraordinarily tight and we expect that this will be your only opportunity to secure this wine at our preferential price.

Description

The winery writes "First, a bouquet of violets, roses, lavender and pure cassis, followed by a banquet of blackcurrant, fragrant wild strawberry and pitch-black cherry, laid out over sweet cedar, and fine, supple French oak. Always floral, always concentrated, always poised – Coleraine ’15 is galaxy-dark with flashes of magenta and brilliant purple. Alive with charm, texture and energy, this is a multi-generational wine of immense cellaring potential."

Raymond Chan writes "Very dark, deep, near impenetrable black-red colour, with a slightly lighter edge.  The nose is beautifully elegant with stylish proportions and expressed with finesse, showing ripe blackberry and blackcurrant fruit with cassis liqueur, lifted by fragrant dark red florals, subtle notes of dark herbs, and enriched by pencilly oak.  Medium-full bodied, the fruit sweetness and richness is the immediate feature on the palate with concentrated and intense, layered flavours of blackberries and blackcurrants, cassis and black plums, along with herbs, floral elements and minerals, unfolding pencilly oak.  The fruit richness is balanced by considerable tannin extraction, the mouthfeel very fine-textured and powdery.  This has an underlying vitality, freshness and power, carrying the plush fruit flavours to a very long, lingering, textural finish.  This is a classically structured, ageworthy Cabernet blend with refined opulence.  10-15 years.  A blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the fruit predominantly from Havelock with a portion from the ‘Bullnose’ vineyard, hand-picked and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 17 months in 70% new French oak barrels.  19.5/20 "
