FIVE STARS 96/100 | Huon Hooke, The Real Review "amazing fruit purity"
FIVE STARS 96/100 | Sam Kim, Wine Orbit "Exquisite and elegant, yet with power and opulence, this should evolve magnificently"
This is just the fourth pinot noir vintage from this prestigious producer. After a long time in the making, Te Mata Estate's first pinot noir release in 2018 was highly anticipated and they are now 100% committed to producing Hawke's Bay Pinot Noir.
Alma 2021 makes a strong statement for Te Mata. This is-full bodied pinot noir with rounded flavours in the red fruit spectrum, supple mouthfeel and some tannic grip. Fresh acidity refocuses the palate but those lush 2021 fruits shine through from start to finish. Subtle wood spice add more interest but remain in check, never taking over proceedings.
Huon Hooke, The Real Review writes "Brilliant and deep purple colour; remarkable for pinot noir, then an explosive bouquet of black cherry and dark plum, loaded with spices too numerous to list. Oak (30% new) is perfectly harmonised. There is no wholebunch character—less than 3% of stems were included—so the wine has amazing fruit purity. It’s very intense and vivacious in the mouth, with tight, firm but measured tannins and prodigious length. This will richly reward a little cellar time."
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit writes "Pristine fruit notes of dark plum and sweet cherry lead the way with notes of floral, thyme, nutmeg and mushroom, it’s finely flowing in the mouth delivering plump mouthfeel backed by refreshing acidity and polished tannins. Exquisite and elegant, yet with power and opulence, this should evolve magnificently. At its best: 2024 to 2036."
