4.5 STARS 90/100 | Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
Wildsong is the exciting new range from winemaker Rod McDonald and the Te Awanga Estate team. The range focuses on finely crafted wines that are 'Grown with respect, made with heart and packed with attitude' and has been a smash hit overseas so we're thrilled to have the range in store.
Their 2021 Hawke's Bay Chardonnay was vinted from fruit from the Mangatahi sub-region and it's a bright and vibrant glass of wine. Ageing on lees has developed texture and complexity and those classic regional stonefruit flavours shine through on the palate. Another excellent wine from this safe set of hands.
The winery writes "Very floral on the nose with stone-fruit flowers, quince and candied nuts. Lively and vibrant in the mouth, with a fantastic creamy texture. Melon and stone-fruit combine with fresh pastries on the finish."
Sam Kim writes "Attractively fruited and elegantly complex, the wine shows nectarine, rockmelon, nougat and popcorn nuances on the nose. The palate is equally charming with ripe fruit flavours together with supple mouthfeel and refreshing acidity, making it delightfully enjoyable."
